The story of two awards:

The H. Duran award goes to the player who helps the team and his teammates
in ways other than just offensive or defensive numbers..  Such as teaching younger
players, building the confidence of a teammate when he needs it, picking up the spirit
of the team when things aren't going well, being an inspiration to all by example or
words, and other ways that sometimes go unnoticed. No team can be successful
without this guy on the squad. For a team to be successful someone has to assume
this role.
As a coach I have always recognized  this type of guy and wanted to make sure
it was known to others. One player of mine in particular always came to mind.
Carlos Duran. In 1995, Carlos' dad had passed away during the season unexpectedly.
It was shortly after the birth a new son for Carlos and his wife Ellen. After some
time off Carlos had rejoined the team and we were in a pennant race as usual.
In a 0-0 game against rival Union, Carlos delivered a solo Home Run off all-star
pitcher Howie Adler. It proved to be the game winner. Not much was said after the
home run as it was obviously an emotional time and everyone knew who that one was
for. Once again it was an inspiration by example from Carlos. Not because of the ball
clearing the fence, but the circumstances that surrounded it. It was then that I decided
to create the H. Duran award, named after Mr. Duran to recognize the type of player that
I'm referring to.

The Jim Shafranski MVP is awarded to the team's most valuable player.
The award started in 1998. Each year this award is given out, my late cousin Jim Shafranski is
honored. He passed away in 2005 from cancer. During those 7 years Jim really showed many of
us the real meaning of courage and fight, and what it meant to never give up or quit.
We can put a value on a baseball game and the statistics that go with it, but his
demonstration of courage, and his strong will to win, we cannot. These things are
priceless and invaluable
In a very tough battle with colon cancer starting in 1996, Jim made it look
easy to the rest of us. Carrying on with his life as if all was normal, maintaining a sense
of humor, and going out of his way to make the rest of us relax.
In 1999 some serious complications occurred which almost cost him his life. An emergency
operation required the loss of one leg in order to save Jim's life at that point. It was still uncertain
if he would make it or not. After a full week of unconsciousness, Jim finally came
around and was told of all that had took place. Once again, Jim stared defeat in the
face and wouldn't turn away. With concern for his family's worries he actually
demanded that a Sciortino's Pizza be ordered and delivered at once to the hospital.
It was done and the Pizza was enjoyed. Many times the Doctors didn't offer much hope, but
Jimmy would surprise then time and time again. I'm glad to have had this man touch my life
the way he did. He leaves his friends and family with so many great memories.
I 'd like to ask everyone to say a prayer for this
inspirational guy asking God to rest his soul in peace.
To date, Jim Shafranski has donated the largest sum of money by an individual to the
Woodbridge Cardinals and has donated the second largest sum by any company,
organization, or individual.

                        Yours Truly,
